So today I’m at the Post Office waiting in line for the clerk to motion me forward. Nice man, I thought to myself. How about I ask him about this “no cell phone in the Post Office” rule that was so aggressively enforced with my friend just the other night. (see earlier blog post on this from a few days ago)
I was almost afraid to ask him. You just never know what these folks might be thinking when you approach the counter and ask the reason behind some rule or policy. You can just imagine him slowly looking up at me from behind his glasses, squinting his eyes to see me better, and slowly say, “Annnnd just why do you wanna know? Hmmmm?” Then he’d reach under the counter and press a secret button…moments later I’d be surrounded by official looking people who would grab me by each arm and whisk me out to the interogation room…people would stare…I’d never be heard from again…
But anyway, I DID ask him: “Is there a rule that says you can’t talk on a cell phone while you’re in the Post Office? I don’t mean while you’re standing in line being served because I know that would be very rude. I mean, like, when you’re just checking the mail in your mailbox out in the outer hallway?”
He looked up at me through his glasses, squinted a bit, started to reach for THE BUTTON, thought better of it and then said, “Nope, I’ve never heard of a rule like that. Can’t imagine why that would be a problem. No rule like that around here anyways.”
So there you have it. I couldn’t find anything on it through a Google search. No one commented on my earlier blog post or wrote in to advise me of the source of such a thing. And as of yet, I haven’t been up to the specific Post Office where all this drama took place.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll enter the lion’s den and ask the question. But if you don’t hear from me again, at least you’ll know where to look!
